lily allen

Because that last post might have offended the fairer sex, we bring you Lily Allen, the British sensation that you haven't heard of yet. Or, if you have, then bloody great bollocks to you: you have great taste, you're part of the international jet-set and you read HOOTENANNY as often as possible. All great building blocks for the well-rounded individual.
Listen/watch; the video for Lily's song "LDN".

And this one will probably shake the foundation of our readership. Lily does a cool parody of Robert Smith and the Cure. If you're a tweaker or a psycho-goth or even just a Mormon, skip this one. The rest of you, party on. This can't be much weirder than Wall's Centennial.

can I ask you a question?

Girls. Girls. Girls.
Stop asking us questions. We do not have the answer. We do not even care.
Unless the question is whether we'd like another beer and a hot dog with brown mustard and onions. Then, of course, the answer is yes. Or, if you ask, want to watch the game tonight? Again, of course we would and don't hassle us when we fall asleep in the chair. Unless of course you want to ...
You get the idea. Now get back in the kitchen and make us some pie.

flaps

The Gilbert "Miracle of Earflap Flight" contest concluded yesterday evening after the rain stopped. Brady O'Rourke (center) took the Gold with an ear-flap flight careening off the top of Barry's garage 60 meters into the Ruby Red grapefruit tree over by the Mormon fence. Brady's trajectory control impressed the judges, though there were some questions raised regarding the aerodynamics of his Freddie Mercury mustache and whether that body-mod met the committee specs rule-wise.
Runner-up Silver Medalist Barry Severson challenged but fell short. Being a short, stunted, runt-like creature, his ear-flaps couldn't get him off the ground for more than a couple of meters. A few seconds of uninterrupted flight and then right into the fire pit like a moth or a girl.
Bronze Medalist Marty Heathershaw wowed the assembled with the mere appearance of ear lobe assisted flight. Having borrowed an iPod, it was reported that he dialed into the Slobberbone song "Springfield, Illinois" and while rocking out, flew around like a fruit bat on acid.
It was a great competitive event - the first ever sponsored by HOOTENANNY. When we've successfully pushed out the brand name, we'll have more. The next we'd like to sponsor is cap related. We're looking for dudes with caps running pell mell into stuccoed walls and fences. We'll rate the contestants based on origin of cap and facial injuries sustained. True blood sport for the HOOTENANNY Hardcore.

arlys "shorpy" klundt

Arlys "Shorpy" Klundt is a shortchanger. Give him a nickel for the Daily Gilbertonian and you'll likely get shorted a few cents or more. His nickname "Shorpy" is a result of his affection for short pants and long stockings, a long since abandoned style.
I met Shorpy outside the Copper Penny on a hot, winter's day in Gilbert, east of Phoenix. He was selling yesterday's newspaper to the unsuspecting early morning inebriates that fancy the Copper Penny's 8:00 - 10:00 AM Happy Hour, the first of several throughout the day.
Noting he was six Bloody Marys into a Monday binge, Shorpy cadged a buck ten for a Sunday Arizona Republic from Hobo Joe Mustache and his girlfriend Bullet-Head Madge. Of course, that got old Bullet-Head riled and a fracas ensued. Shorpy, small of stature but quick with his fists, buried a haymaker in Madge's gut like a bowling ball in jello and Madge took a header into the pavement. Hobo Joe tried to pull Madge to her feet, but her well-worn cotton sweater tore loose exposing Madge's rarely washed breast support system - a system of wires and straps to complex to describe in detail.
Shorpy took flight, but while keeping an eye behind him, collided with a low-hanging, awning support in front of the Liberty Market Grocery, losing three teeth and his pride in the process.
Shorpy doesn't shortchange in Gilbert now, having fled for Pueblo, Colorado where the enemies of Hobo Joe Mustache and Bullet-Head Madge are known to congregate and Shorpy could find sanctuary. This Saturday, I'm going to drive up the rim to Pueblo and look for Shorpy.

Articles of Impeachment of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney

The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. - - ARTICLE II, SECTION 4 OF THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney have committed violations and subversions of the Constitution of the United States of America in an attempt to carry out with impunity crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes and deprivations of the civil rights of the people of the United States and other nations, by assuming powers of an imperial executive unaccountable to law and usurping powers of the Congress, the Judiciary and those reserved to the people of the United States, by the following acts:

1) Seizing power to wage wars of aggression in defiance of the U.S. Constitution, the U.N. Charter and the rule of law; carrying out a massive assault on and occupation of Iraq, a country that was not threatening the United States, resulting in the death and maiming of over one hundred thousand Iraqis, and thousands of U.S. G.I.s.

2) Lying to the people of the U.S., to Congress, and to the U.N., providing false and deceptive rationales for war.

3) Authorizing, ordering and condoning direct attacks on civilians, civilian facilities and locations where civilian casualties were unavoidable.

4) Instituting a secret and illegal wiretapping and spying operation against the people of the United States through the National Security Agency.

5) Threatening the independence and sovereignty of Iraq by belligerently changing its government by force and assaulting Iraq in a war of aggression.

6) Authorizing, ordering and condoning assassinations, summary executions, kidnappings, secret and other illegal detentions of individuals, torture and physical and psychological coercion of prisoners to obtain false statements concerning acts and intentions of governments and individuals and violating within the United States, and by authorizing U.S. forces and agents elsewhere, the rights of individuals under the First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Eighth Amendments to the Constitution of the United States, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

7) Making, ordering and condoning false statements and propaganda about the conduct of foreign governments and individuals and acts by U.S. government personnel; manipulating the media and foreign governments with false information; concealing information vital to public discussion and informed judgment concerning acts, intentions and possession, or efforts to obtain weapons of mass destruction in order to falsely create a climate of fear and destroy opposition to U.S. wars of aggression and first strike attacks.

8) Violations and subversions of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, both a part of the "Supreme Law of the land" under Article VI, paragraph 2, of the Constitution, in an attempt to commit with impunity crimes against peace and humanity and war crimes in wars and threats of aggression against Afghanistan, Iraq and others and usurping powers of the United Nations and the peoples of its nations by bribery, coercion and other corrupt acts and by rejecting treaties, committing treaty violations, and frustrating compliance with treaties in order to destroy any means by which international law and institutions can prevent, affect, or adjudicate the exercise of U.S. military and economic power against the international community.

9) Acting to strip United States citizens of their constitutional and human rights, ordering indefinite detention of citizens, without access to counsel, without charge, and without opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention, based solely on the discretionary designation by the Executive of a citizen as an "enemy combatant."

10) Ordering indefinite detention of non-citizens in the United States and elsewhere, and without charge, at the discretionary designation of the Attorney General or the Secretary of Defense.

11) Ordering and authorizing the Attorney General to override judicial orders of release of detainees under INS jurisdiction, even where the judicial officer after full hearing determines a detainee is wrongfully held by the government.

12) Authorizing secret military tribunals and summary execution of persons who are not citizens who are designated solely at the discretion of the Executive who acts as indicting official, prosecutor and as the only avenue of appellate relief.

13) Refusing to provide public disclosure of the identities and locations of persons who have been arrested, detained and imprisoned by the U.S. government in the United States, including in response to Congressional inquiry.

14) Use of secret arrests of persons within the United States and elsewhere and denial of the right to public trials.

15) Authorizing the monitoring of confidential attorney-client privileged communications by the government, even in the absence of a court order and even where an incarcerated person has not been charged with a crime.

16) Ordering and authorizing the seizure of assets of persons in the United States, prior to hearing or trial, for lawful or innocent association with any entity that at the discretionary designation of the Executive has been deemed "terrorist."

17) Engaging in criminal neglect in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, depriving thousands of people in Louisiana, Mississippi and other Gulf States of urgently needed support, causing mass suffering and unnecessary loss of life.

18) Institutionalization of racial and religious profiling and authorization of domestic spying by federal law enforcement on persons based on their engagement in noncriminal religious and political activity.

19) Refusal to provide information and records necessary and appropriate for the constitutional right of legislative oversight of executive functions.

20) Rejecting treaties protective of peace and human rights and abrogation of the obligations of the United States under, and withdrawal from, international treaties and obligations without consent of the legislative branch, and including termination of the ABM treaty between the United States and Russia, and rescission of the authorizing signature from the Treaty of Rome which served as the basis for the International Criminal Court.

vietnamese pork sandwich

On Gilbert Road south of Ray there's a Great Clips where I go to get my hair cut. I go every month or so. Each time, I draw a new clipper. Today I drew a sweet little Vietnamese gal. I got a great haircut. Those of you who see me in the next few days will attest.
I also got directions to Lee's Sandwiches on the corner of Warner and Dobson in Chandler. Lee's makes great sandwiches including a favorite of mine, the Banh Mi Thit Bale (pronounced bah me tea by). It's a French roll with shredded pork, pickled carrots, hot peppers, cilantro and a sauce sort of like Horseradish. The twelve inch version set me back $2.97 with tax.
They also serve Pho (pronounced fuh), a noodle soup that will drive you insane with pleasure.
I got started with this food in Minneapolis where my brother's law partner, who served in Vietnam, turned us on to this and the ultimate - Vietnamese coffee (find a Vietnamese restaurant and try it).
Anyway, the clipper, who left Vietnam as a refugee and landed in Malaysia before making her way to us also offered some true cilantro. Seems she brought two seeds with her from Vietnam in a make-up case and they grew well. She works on Tuesday and I'm to come back and get some of her cilantro. We've made a plan.
The haircut cost 12 bucks, I gave her a twenty. I wonder if that was enough.

cortez - what a killer
Hernán(do) Cortés Pizarro, 1st Marqués del Valle de Oaxaca (1485–December 2, 1547) was the conquistador who became famous for leading the military expedition that initiated the Spanish Conquest of Mexico. Cortés was part of the generation of European colonizers that began the first phase of the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
Cortez the Killer is a song by Neil Young from his 1975 album, Zuma. It was recorded with Young's band Crazy Horse and ranked #321 on Rolling Stone 's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
The song is about Hernán Cortés, a conquistador who conquered Mexico for Spain in the 1500s. The song also makes reference to the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II and other events that occurred in the Spanish conquest of the New World.
Only after several minutes of this does the lyric start. First it pictures Cortés and his "galleons and guns" about to arrive, then jumps to the Aztecs, depicting their civilization in somewhat idealized fashion even though explicitly acknowledging, before and after some guitar work, both human sacrifice and the immense human toll of building their pyramids. Instead of describing what happened when Cortez appeared, the lyric in the last verse suddenly jumps from third person narrative to first person, with elliptical references to a romantic relationship gone bad. This may refer to Cortez's Aztec mistress whom he loved dearly (perhaps Doña Marina, his interpreter),[citation needed] or to some other unspecified relationship. Finally after another spell of guitar, Young simply mutters, "Cortez ... what a killer."
Young has stated in concert that he wrote the song while studying history in high school. In Jimmy McDonough's biography of Young, entitled Shakey, the author asked Neil if his songs were autobiographical. Young replied, "...What the fuck am I doing writing about Aztecs in 'Cortez the Killer' like I was there, wandering around? 'Cause I only read about it in a few books. A lotta shit I just made up because it came to me." Nevertheless, the song was banned in Spain, according to Young's notes for the album Decade.

2006 march madness champion returns

2006 March Madness Champion, overall winner and good guy, LeeRoy Redcorn.

2006 March Madness Champion LeeRoy Redcorn announced today his intention to compete again in the California based March Madness Tournament Pool organized by Morongo Valley resident known only by the alias XYZ Catsfly. LeeRoy took the Grand Prize in last year's pool, winning by tiebreaker but winning nonetheless. At an early afternoon press conference at the Copper Penny Bar in downtown Gilbert, Arizona, LeeRoy embellished upon his winnings, indicating they, when combined with a victory in his Fantasy Football League, bought several pairs of shoes for his baby who, coincidentally, needed a new pair of shoes.
"I was especially delighted to see to the demise of the trash-talking ne'er do well, XYZ Catsfly and his southern California cohort." said the always elegantly attired Mr. Redcorn. "I shall again endeavor to teach this ruffian mob a lesson in NCAA Men's Basketball from my remote corner of the beautiful Sonoran desert here in Gilbert." Mr. Redcorn has agreed to compete under the sponsorship of Medicinal Weed and Beads, Peelin' Wheelies, Inc., of Kingman, Arizona.
XYZ Catsfly, hiding somewhere in the lowly, scornful Mojave desert, was unavailable for comment.

But he says he's alright
he's been awake for days wondering what to do
he's been staring down the same old wall
trying to look right through
but ya know he ain't working
ya know he just feeling
And I say so long
Ya know he got what he paid for and now its slipping away
he'll be going back for more but I don't know who will turn him away
but they say he ain't real, they say he's just feeling
And I say so long
now they're feeling foolish they've watched the game
they've been walking around in circle trying to feel the same

i'll have the scampi

So I'm sitting outside for lunch at Oregano's in downtown Tempe when this huge, craw fish sized bug descends from the tree overhead and splashes down in the pool of garlic-butter surrounding my shrimp scampi. My lunch-mate recoils in obvious disgust as the creature attempts to lift off, but hangs up on the lip of the plate and tumbles into the ashtray where it becomes trapped by the apparent suction effect of buttered wings on glass. As it lay there in prone position, all eighteen or so legs working frantically but not in unison, I'm reminded of Kafka's Metamorphosis and how much I hated that book and how I just wanted to kill the disgusting man-bug and be done with it. Yeah, you guessed it - I missed the larger significance of the book and its meaning. To me Kafka was just a twisted old Austrian hop-head.
Nonetheless, with a final great effort, the monstrous tree bug flipped itself upright and began to vibrate. It sounded like a tiny Formula One Racer or an old Yamaha trail bike wrapped way too tight. Soon, it began to hover and careen ominously from side to side.
Until I flipped out and stuck a fork in it.

big brown eyes

The dB's

The dB's were a power pop group of the late 1970s and 1980s. The bandmembers were Peter Holsapple, Chris Stamey, Will Rigby and Gene Holder, all of whom were from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The group was formed in New York City.
They released their first album, Stands for Decibels, in 1981, to critical acclaim but negligible sales. Their sound was a modernized version of earlier power pop, with precise arrangements and highly accomplished instrumental work. Stamey and Holsapple were the band's songwriters, and while Holsapple was skilled in the composing of fairly straightforward tunes such as "Big Brown Eyes" and "Bad Reputation," Stamey's songs, which include "Espionage" and "Tearjerkin'," tended to be somewhat more experimental. They released a second album in 1982, Repercussion, which built upon the strengths of the first album, and also released singles such as "Judy." These two albums, recorded on the British label Albion, have since been reissued on one compact disc.
Stamey left the group after the second album, and pursued a career as a solo artist and producer. The group then recorded a third album, Like This, released in 1984.
The final CD released while the dB's were together was The Sound of Music in 1987. Again under Holsapple's direction, this is perhaps the band's most traditional pop album.
Although the dB's enjoyed only a limited popularity, their recordings were held in high esteem by critics. Robert Christgau, reviewing their first album, said "This is pop at its tensest--the precise harmonies, broken rhythms, and Byrdsy zoom effects are drawn so tight they make the expertly rendered romantic ups and downs of the songs sound intense and earned."

In the light they both looked the same
Poured them out on into the world
On every boy and every girl

It's in the Neon Bible, the Neon Bible

If the Neon Bible is right

Take the poison of your age
Don't lick your fingers when you turn the page
What I know is what you know is right
In the city it's the only light
It's the Neon Bible, the Neon Bible
Not much chance for survival
If the Neon Bible is right

Oh God! Well look at you now!
Oh! You lost it, but you don't know how!
In the light of a golden calf
Oh God! I had to laugh!

Take the poison of your age
Don't lick your fingers when you turn the page
It was wrong but you said it was right
In the future I will read at night

It's the Neon Bible, the Neon Bible
Not much chance for survival

While drinking Shiner in Deep Elum, I met Rhett Miller, born Stewart Ransom Miller II in Austin, Texas on September 6, 1970. He is the lead singer of the alt-country band the Old 97's and has also has a successful solo career. He graduated from St. Mark's School of Texas in Dallas in 1989. He was weird but for Texas he was alright. I like Texas.
In this old, live video Rhett plays solo - covering the Pixies and David Bowie. Guess which.

Be smart. Buy Old 97's CDs while you still can.

He was born in Buxton, Derbyshire. He grew up in nearby Chapel en le Frith and went to New Mills Grammar School. After failing in law at University College London, he later attended (but did not graduate from) the University of Glasgow, where he studied philosophy and English and met the other members of The Commotions.
Their 1984 debut, Rattlesnakes, contained literary and pop culture references to such figures as Norman Mailer, Grace Kelly, Eva Marie Saint, Truman Capote and Joan Didion. The group produced two more albums, Easy Pieces and Mainstream, before disbanding in 1989, when Cole relocated to New York to record with various artists, including Fred Maher, Robert Quine and Matthew Sweet.

Jeez! Where have we been, you ask? Well, the BIG CHEESE flew in from Greensboro Monday and treated the staff to a whirlwind spin cycle of restaurants and bars. It was like a kaleidoscope of fruit-flavored girl-drinks, short skirts and bad, Vegas-style craziness.
We learned a lot. Like, did you know there were catfish the size of mermaids in Tempe Town Lake? It's either that or catfish become mermaids after 17 shots of Patron Silver. Or did you know it's almost impossible to steal a small, single engine plane with a flat tire from the Sky Harbor runway next to the Left Seat Diner and even more difficult to tow one through a chain link fence and over the gravel abutment to the SR 202 East. Even with a driver in the plane! Steering. Or trying to.
Well, the BIG CHEESE is safely back in Greensboro, the Hoot Staffers are mostly recovered from the vestiges of advanced alcohol poisoning and I'm off to climb Mt. Everest with eight, Oompa-Loompa looking Sherpas I met at The Library Bar on Mill Avenue at ASU. Can you say green tea with yak butter? In Kathmandu?

Sasquatch
We was toolin' up the Kings Highway 63 in southern Ontario, Canada just south of Thunder Bay, listening to Canadian native rockers April Wine. Just at the opening line of "Say Hello" this frickin' sasquatch bolted out in front of my Nissan Titan scaring the be-Jesus out of me and my buddy, Herve, recently of Nogales, Sonora, Mexico. Herve quickly dinged the shaggy biped with an unopened Budweiser. I hauled it to a quick stop at a 45 degree slide and just barely missed squashing the sasquatch.
We roped the winch up over the cab and pulled the stinky bugger into the bed, figuring that as the first to capture a live bigfoot we would be rich, famous or both. Our immediate problem was our advanced state of intoxication. Who could we tell? Mounties? Hell no - they're cops aren't they? Who else? Jeez, we didn't know who held authority in this backwoods third world paradise. Bob and Doug McKenzie? No. We decided they were TV dudes and about the only thing good to come out of Canada aside from a beer or two (and not that bearpiss Moosehead crap). We decided to drive deeper into the boreal forest, start a fire, drink more beer and wait for our prize to awaken.
Awaken he did. Alleviating a serious case of "morning wood", he began to irrigate the truck bed and because the bedliner did not include drains, his effusive discharge began to accumulate and moisten his thick shaggy-dog style hair increasing the stink to an almost unbearable stench on any stink-meter. Herve fled gagging into the woods. I tried to figure out how to untie this stink generator with minimum damage to me and/or my truck or getting any sasquatch pee on me. Suddenly, my training came back to me.
I had studied collective behavior and crypto-zoology at the University of South Dakota during the sasquatch invasion of the Cheyenne River Sioux Indian Reservation in the early 80's. I quickly grabbed a flashlight, a camera, some trail mix and a pair of size 17 Air Jordan's I always keep behind the driver's side seat in my truck just for this eventuality.
I placed the Air Jordans on the tailgate just out of his reach, trained the flashlight on them and began flicking it on and off. This interested the freshly woken sasquatch. I used the flash from the camera to simulate an arena type setting and cranked Toto's Eye Of The Tiger over the 8 speaker Rockford Fosgate that comes standard with the the Nissan Titan 5.6 Liter.
The sasquatch calmly unfastened his binders, eyed the Jordans carefully and noted Herve's return. Herve, sensing a critical moment, popped the top on a Bud and handed it to the sasquatch. Twelve beers later, Herve and I and the sasquatch were gathered around a fire with the sasquatch sporting his new Jordans. About 2:00 AM, our stinky buddy indicated he had an engagement and motioned an over and out. I snapped the above photo as he bugged out.
We know it sounds unlikely, and the mushrooms we scored in Duluth may have affected our judgment and perception, but we're pretty sure this actually happened. Herve would back up the whole story if he hadn't been deported back to Sonora shortly after we reported our story to the Arizona Daily. I hear he's on college student kidney patrol for the local coyotes.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the sasquatch absconded on the Sam's Club trail mix and my Run Westy Run compilation CD. What a friggin' bi-ach.

your love is gonna drown

The service for Eric Charles Eisenbraun will be held in Wall South Dakota at the Lutheran Church on March 16, 2007 at 2:00 PM.
Before he passed, Eric and I shared a lot of music, talked of football (he was a fierce competitor, whether friend or foe) and he often spoke of his love for his wife, sons and daughters. His death, like my mother's, was a tragedy for me and many others. A blow. Hard to recover from.

He liked this song ...

If I could open my arms
And span the length of the isle of Manhattan,
I'd bring it to where you are
Making a lake of the East River and Hudson
If I could open my mouth
Wide enough for a marching band to march out
They would make your name sing
And bend through alleys and bounce off all the buildings.

I wish we could open our eyes
To see in all directions at the same time
Oh what a beautiful view
If you were never aware of what was around you
And it is true what you said
That I live like a hermit in my own head
But when the sun shines again
I'll pull the curtains and blinds to let the light in.

Sorrow drips into your heart through a pinhole

listen

Can you hear it? Is it the barely audible chorus of wounded man-souls left on the cigarette-butt-strewn battleground of party-music by the new, improved Sister Sinead O'Connor of pop (AKA Britney Spears)? My friend Chelsea says she shaved her head because her "cornrows" hurt. Apparently, they weren't secured firmly to the gray matter deep within her air conditioned skull. My theory is that she's the only human alive that can hear a silent dog whistle and dang, they're selling like hotcakes lately. Poor girl. Maybe some more booze would help.
Nonetheless, as an unruly 13 year old boy from Pringle, SD, I still plan to make a play for Britney. As soon as I get my head gear removed and my rhymes down. Long live the queen of rotten-pop. I am beating a path to your heart.

many rivers to cross

By Jimmy Cliff
For Eric Charles Eisenbraun

Many rivers to cross
But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of dover

Many rivers to cross
And it's only my will that keeps me alive
I've been licked, washed up for years
And I merely survive because of my pride

And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's such a drag to be on your own
My woman left me and she didn't say why
Well, I guess I'll have to cry

Many rivers to cross
But just where to begin I'm playing for time
There have been times I find myself
Thinking of committing some dreadful crime

Yes, I've got many rivers to cross
But I can't seem to find my way over
Wandering, I am lost
As I travel along the white cliffs of Dover

Yes, I've got many rivers to cross
And I merely survive because of my will...

wendigo

Hootenanny staff met a Mayan wendigo shaman in Temporal Canyon north of Patgonia, AZ. In the canyon brush firelight, the shaman conjured a spirit. It was a flat-soled, dog-faced creature that tossed rocks into the camp. Truly freaky but never scary. This wendigo meant no harm. I think he just wished we weren't there.

Here's some historical dope on the wendigo:
In the mythology of the Crow, legends say the Wendigo was once a warrior. When beset with an enemy the warrior could give his soul and life in exchange for the power to save his tribe. But once the threat was eliminated, the Wendigo is forced to leave his tribe and wander the countryside for eternity. This would mean there would be many Wendigo. The Wendigo depicted in these legends is a large human/lupine chimera usually with white fur. The skeletal Wendigo is usually Mayan in nature while the Crow one is farther north.

Native American versions of the creature spoke of a giant Spirit, over fifteen feet tall, which had once been human but had been transformed into a creature by the use of magic. The Wendigo is usually described to have glowing eyes, large yellow fangs and long tongues. Some Wendigos are said to be covered from head to toe with hair and has a yellowish skin. One story says the creature can only be seen head-on, because it is too thin to be seen from the side. Wendigo has a very large appetite for human flesh.

To Algonquian-speaking tribes of Native Americans, the Wendigo is a malevolent supernatural creature. It is usually described as a giant with a heart of ice; sometimes it is thought to be entirely made of ice. Its body is skeletal and deformed, with missing lips and toes.

The first accounts of the Wendigo myth by explorers and missionaries date back to the 17th century. They describe it rather generically as a werewolf, devil, or cannibal. The Wendigo was usually presumed to have once been human. Different origins of the Wendigo are described in variations of the myth. A hunter may become the Wendigo when encountering it in the forest at night, or when becoming possessed by its spirit in a dream. When the cannibalistic element of the myth is stressed, it is assumed that anyone who eats corpses in a famine becomes a Wendigo as a result. The only way to destroy a Wendigo is to melt its heart of ice. In recent times, it has been identified with Sasquatch or Bigfoot by cryptozoologists, but there is little evidence in the indigenous folklore for it being a similar creature.

Perhaps this myth was used as a deterrent and cautionary tale among northern tribes whose winters were long and bitter and whose hunting parties often were trapped in storms with no recourse but to consume members of their own party. It could be indicative of starvation that the Wendigo is said to consume moss and other unpalatable food when human flesh is unavailable. Its physical deformities are suggestive of starvation and frostbite, so the Wendigo may be a myth based on a personification of the hardships of winter and the taboo of cannibalism.

In some stories a Wendigo will follow a lone wanderer for a long time. When the prey becomes suspicious and turns around the Wendigo always manages to get out of sight by hiding behind a tree. After a while the followed person starts to become hysterical and runs until he makes an error. The Wendigo then strikes. If someone actually survives a Wendigo attack they get the Wendigo-fever: after a night of nightmares and pain in their legs--indeed, the Wendigo itself often has no feet--Wendigo-fevered people strip themselves naked and run into the forest screaming.

shucks, we're darned if we do

What is escalation? Should we escalate the fight in Iraq? Pin some of it on Iran? Hootenanny thinks that we're overlooking the boys we're asking to handle this shit. Hootenanny thinks we have two basic options and that neither is good.
Option 1. Provide the boys with the support and weaponry to get them home alive and unharmed.
Option 2. Get the boys home now, alive and unharmed.
Even the most high-school uneducated cowboy or indian knows that fresh water and family is more important than oil. Hoss Cartwright held things together when his little brother went on to fetch water for the right with Little House On The Prairie.
You might not understand this rant. We don't expect you will.
Let me put it this way.
When I was a little kid a war broke out between me and my best friend who lived on the other side of the road.
There was one battle. A fistfight in the garage that I lost and retreated from.
We went into stalemate.
We didn't speak.
Though we still lived a few feet from each other.
We were 12, but acting like old men.
Like politicians and world leaders. Prideful. Arrogant.
For years wasting every opportunity to be the friends we were before.

We're darned if we do,
But I'm afraid we're damned if we don't

Let's just bring our boys home

patagonia pig hunt

This is how close we didn't get!
Patagonia is a town in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, United States. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the town is 825.[1] Patagonia was formerly a supply center for nearby mines and ranches. Presently, it is a tourist destination, retirement community and arts and crafts center.
The Collared Peccary (Tayassu tajacu) occurs from the southwestern United States into South America. They are often found in dry arid habitats. They are sometimes called the "musk hog" because of their strong odor. In some areas of the southwestern United States they have become habituated to human beings and live in relative harmony with them in such areas as the suburbs of cities where there are still relatively large areas of brush and undergrowth to move through. They are generally found in squadrons of eight to 15 animals of various ages. They will defend themselves if they feel threatened but otherwise tend to ignore human beings. They defend themselves with their long tusks, which sharpen themselves whenever the mouth opens or close.
Hunting is the practice of pursuing animals for food, recreation, trade or for their products. In modern use, the term refers to regulated and legal hunting, as distinguished from poaching, which is the killing, trapping or capture of animals contrary to law. Hunted animals are referred to as game animals, and are usually large mammals or migratory birds. By definition, hunting strictly speaking, excludes the killing -though similar techniques may be used- of individual protected animals, such as bears which have become dangerous to humans, as well as the killing of non-game animals, domestic animals, or vermin as a means of pest control. Hunting can be a component of modern wildlife management, for example to help maintain a population of healthy animals within an environment's ecological carrying capacity.[1]. In the United States, wildlife managers are frequently part of hunting regulatory and licensing bodies, where they help to set rules on the number, manner and conditions in which game may be selected for culling.

lament

this is my friend charlie parr in london
charlie's making a living off his music now
not like the early mpls days up in his apartment on hennepin
drinkin' jameson and
scratchin' out tunes with terry while making up songs
about terry's hairy spanish girlfriend

i haven't seen charlie since a cold night in duluth
a few years back
these days he's got several albums out of both
original and other material
all good and all tuned to his crafted warble and footboard timing
suiting a scholar and an artist

he's lost a bit of weight from all the touring
but the clothes are the same and we hear from his wife
that he still needs to be reminded to wash
but he's a fan of dostoyevsky's the idiot
and he serves a proper master
supports his local independent record store
and drives an old truck

sometimes people need beddin' down

Sorry I've been absent, but a friend flew in Tuesday night on his way to LA and needed a place to stay. So I picked him up, gave him a key to the 711 and a bed up front where he could watch the leaves turn brown on the Ficus until this morning when I took him back to Sky Harbor for the United Express LA connection.
It's good to see old friends and to have them stay for a day or two and toast you with stories of the northern homeland where game is still plentiful, maidens abound and the law allows you to shoot dope fiends on sight. Spin the wheel and roll the bones, we'll all meet in the happy hunting grounds on the banks of Bear Lodge Creek someday. Bank it.

give a hoot

So I'm motoring down the Superstition Freeway at 75 mph in my Titan 5.6 V8 when this bi-ach in a Lexus with vanity plates reading NY NTV cuts in front of me and releases the Starbuck's coffee bomb. As the coffee bomb explodes on the concrete and splatters my windshield with what appears to be and smells like a French roast, low fat, decaff latte, I imagine I'm in an episode of Batman. Accordingly, I pursue this dangerous fiend and ride up behind her as traffic tightens just after the 101 stack. I'm just about pissed enough to push her fat, rich silver Lexus into the high speed HOV lane, but I refrain because I want to study this specimen of freeway dingleberry up close.
Dingleberry is unaware, apparently, of her own lower moronic actions while she puts on her makeup with one hand and talks on her pink Razor with the other. As traffic slows, I move up beside the pimped Lexus with gold rims and trim and notice that, for some odd reason, the passenger window is halfway down.
Halfway down.
My Camel is down by half too and burning strong. I can flick a butt 20 feet or more depending on the wind and there's no wind today. An evil, spiteful desire for revenge takes hold of me. I can't control it and before I know it, the Camel and it's cherry-red-ash tip are in the air through the window and right in her pleated navy skirted lap. Like a hole in one or sex on the third date, it's just according to plan. Her reaction was akin to painting a cat's bum with turpentine; screechin' ensued and she floored it right into the HOV lane like a bat out of a Texas cave in August.
My lane opened up a bit and I moved forward dutifully, like all the other drones heading into town for the wages necessary to buy AC for the upcoming summer. She on the other hand, was almost immediately arrested by the DPS for driving in the HOV lane alone. Saw it in the rear-view.
Live large NY NTV, with a hole in your expensive navy skirt and oxblood lipstick on your forehead.
And don't toss any more coffee bombs at a transplanted South Dakotan in Arizona. He just might bite back.

cookin' taters

Me and Gilbert Steve was cookin' taters out back of the office in a charcoal fire when one of them up and exploded blowing hot burning coals and tiny, vicious, wet tater fragments every darn which way. One beelined at Shelly Belavaqua's eyelid at jet speed and landed thereon with a sound akin to a tiny slap. As Shelly began his dance, screaming and cussing, Gilbert Steve tried dousing him with what was left of the charcoal fluid.
Maybe not such a good idea. The static electricity created by Shelly's polyester slacks sparked the fluid and Shelly went up like a February Christmas tree. Mushroom cloud and all. As luck would have it, someone had already called the fire department - something about starting a fire in the trunk of a car. But hey, we didn't have a proper charcoal grill and we agreed the trunk on Gilbert Steve's Hyundai Elantra closely approximated a Weber.
As you can imagine, the Hyundai was a total loss, Shelly was badly burned and the taters exploded and/or burned to cinder format. But, there was a silver lining. Me and Gilbert Steve learned a valuable lesson about cookin' taters. Taters can blow up in a fire, the trunk of a Hyundai is very close to it's gas tank and Shelly Belavaqua is a big, fat, crybaby wussy.

for the modern toastmaster

continuing the toaster theme introduced recently
this elegant toaster, designed by George Watson, pulls bread through a heated element, depositing it in a V-shaped receiving station
designer's own words:
There has been little development of the toaster since the start of the century, whilst other appliances have developed and improved incorporating new technologies and thinking, toaster have remained relatively untouched. When the toaster was first invented eating toast was a social activity that took place on the breakfast table, these days toasters have been relegated to cheap plastic objects hidden away in the kitchen landscape. This toaster is designed to engage the user, re-invigorating the social context of toasting by questioning everything about what we toast with today. I was also keen to make playful object to be proud of having on your breakfast table. Slip moulded bone china allowed me create this intricate and sculptural form, but also provided the material longevity that I required. This is a toaster that brings life and joy to a stagnant domestic appliance, and iconic object for the home.

history of wall (part 2)

On October 1, 1893, Charles Hardin was arrested in Carrol County Missouri on charges of horse thievery. On condition that he leave the state and not return, Charles traveled north and west to eastern Pennington County, South Dakota and set up camp on the Cheyenne River near Pedro not far from the wagon route from Ft. Pierre to Rapid City in the Black Hills. Charles became a mail carrier for the US Post Office and was the first mail carrier in the area to travel by vehicle across the rutted, bumpy prairie. It is not a matter of history where or how Charles acquired his first Model T Ford, but it is a matter of thoughtful speculation.
It has been put forward that Charles robbed an ox-drawn wagon full of gold bound for the railhead in Ft. Pierre. To date, no stronger argument has been put forth and it would explain the hookers and beer.
Charles Hardin was brutally robbed and killed in Chicago, IL in 1912, 5 years after playing an important, though hardly noticed role in the establishment of Wall. The infamous Hardin Hotel was Wall's first and only full service brothel. Today little is known of the establishment and the town elders, a tight-lipped bunch of semi-illiterates, have mostly passed away.
HOOTENANNY staff have peeled away several layers of the old onion behind which the history of the Hardin Hotel stands silent and mute. In future posts, that sordid history will be revealed. Though reputations may be damaged and/or altogether lost in the telling, it is a story that must be told.

i was watching late night tv
and the dude was interviewing David Arquette.
he said his mom
"was like a cheesecake mom".
that triggered a memory.

i remembered i'd met a dude that had met him
in phoenix.
i was in town in april 2001.
my buddy ted came over from roswell, nm.
at the Sheraton on Dunlap we asked the concierge for a good steakhouse
and for a driver.
couple of suggestions later were in a Lincoln piloted by "skip".
we announce our intentions and needs
and "skip" gets us rolling.
shortly after driving us by Black Angus (a chain) which we decline,
he gets us to Hunter, a great, but now defunct cellar steakhouse with an incredible wine list, fantastic steaks and a shitload of expensive single malts.
on the way
he mentions
he'd driven David Arquette to the same restaurant
after a similar foray and similar decisions.
neither Ted nor i can fathom who the fuck David Arquette is
we look at each other like - who?
"skip" says, Patricia Arquette's brother and that helps, but not very much.
we enjoy an evening at Hunter Steakhouse then call the service for return delivery.
we specifically request "skip",
driver of the star(s).
he doesn't show.
he sends a replacement.
we continue to request "skip" throughout the weekend,
but we never see him again
either he never existed
or Ted and i are not stars
enough for "skip".

wall, sd (first in a series)

The Unedited History of The Beginning of the Town of Wall

In the darkness of a cold spring in 1907, when the hard scab of prairie rejected infrequent rain and hungry folk wandered aimlessly like cattle searching for onions, saltpeter and bark-potatoes, a town arose next to the nearly completed junction of the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. The name of the new town was "Wall" because of an abrupt break from the flat prairie land to the rough badlands formations just east. This break forms an eight-mile barrier that had been known as the Wall by the Missouri Arikara for many years. As government took hold, that name planted and held largely due to site specific advertising that, while it may have run afoul of the law, was effective nonetheless. It didn't hurt when the US Government built an Interstate Highway to feed it's growing nuclear habit, with underground silos spread far and wide. Each more expensive and ultimately less useful than a casually constructed Boy Scout camp latrine.

Wall is situated in a corridor between Pierre, the state capitol, and Rapid City, largely as a result of the gold mining days of the late 1870?s and the treaty breaches that the US Government neglected or instrumented against the Lakota beginning in the 1840's. Reparations for the theft are still outstanding even though the US Supreme Court has long since determined that the breach was nothing more than pure theft. The Lakota Nation has refused monetary redress in preference of the full legal title they deserve as original possessors.

The first building in Wall was a dirt-sod shanty, maybe 80 by 40 foot, built by entrepreneur Harry Fuller and crew of rough-shod, thick-boot-soled-banjo-hicks. Though not intended as a cafe, so many persons stopped there that the Fuller crew put up a table outside the building and served meals, including hot grilled jacket shanks, bark-potatoes and stolen kegs of Canadian bear piss beer. Cellar roots, chokecherries, prairie radishes and shade bush thistles were added to the menu in season.

On July 10, 1907, the Hendrickson Land Company opened the sale of town lots on the homesteads of Gene and Bill Mackrill. This date was taken as the birthday of the town and has been celebrated annually ever since. On that day, the first lots sold were on the west side of Main Street in Block 3. The Mackrill's sold, gathered their cash and fled east. They had no misgivings about the viability of the new township not like many to come later.

My Brother Loved Football

Eric

I regret to inform you that I did not win the fantasy football league this year
I did do fairly well
going 10-7
not good, but not bad

I was done in by our dear, mutual friend and nemesis Crunchtime
I lost both attempts to what I thought was an inferior squad, statistically speaking
But I was plainly out coached by a worthy opponent and friend and I admit it

I'm also happy to report that the Commissioner
Ran the league as haphazardly as ever
We've both held that role in our own leagues
So we knew his approach, and the associated struggle and strife

I'm sure we'll have the final results
Before we put your ashes in your chosen locale
I'll beam them out when the Commissioner gets around to issuing invoices

- Commissioner, I'll write my check after the service

Thanks for bringing me into ESFL in 1991
Back when you did it all on paper
And the scoring out of the Dallas Morning News
16 self addressed stamped envelopes to get the weekly reports
About every three weeks or so we'd get one

It brought you and me back in touch
Stats, trades, scoring rules, and hey what's up with you man
And continued all this time
No one here will know what I mean, but it settled the Merle Haggard issue
The broken ankle, which you recalled as your fault and I as mine ...
The Deep Creek Fishing Trip
That extremely ugly, copper-colored Plymouth Fury

I would rather have the chance to argue with you about these things than have you go

But you can't win an argument without an opponent

And I suspect you're looking down right now and regretting

AS MUCH AS I AM

A chance to do so again

but it's getting there

a poem from henry chinaski starts now ...

washed-up, on shore, the old yellow notebook
out again
I write from the bed
as I did last
year.
will see the doctor,
Monday.
"yes, doctor, weak legs, vertigo, head-
aches and my back
hurts."
"are you drinking?" he will ask.
"are you getting your
exercise, your
vitamins?"
I think that I am just ill
with life, the same stale yet
fluctuating
factors.
even at the track
I watch the horses run by
and it seems
meaningless.
I leave early after buying tickets on the
remaining races.
"taking off?" asks the motel
clerk.
"yes, it's boring,"
I tell him.
"If you think it's boring
out there," he tells me, "you oughta be
back here."
so here I am
propped up against my pillows
again
just an old guy
just an old writer
with a yellow
notebook.
something is
walking across the
floor
toward
me.
oh, it's just
my cat
this
time.

I'm floating in a black balloon
I must make it through this afternoon
Shame shifting shadow down drifting
Rim's rolling now with all his might
Rain drops falling through a starry night
Sunrise on a choppy crusade

this is not goodbye

a fond farewell
The litebrite's now black and white
Cause you took apart a picture that wasn't right
Pitch burning on a shining sheet
The only maker that you'd want to meet
The dying man in a living room
Who's shadow paces the floor
Who'll take you out in the open door
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
Fond farewell to a friend
He said really I just wanna dance
Good and evil matched perfect it's a great romance
I can deal with some physic pain
If it'll slow down my higher brain
Veins full of disappearing ink
Vomiting in the kitchen sink
Disconnecting from the missing link
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
Who couldn't get things right
Fond farewell to a friend
I see you're leaving me and taking up with the enemy
The cold comfort of the in between
A little less than a human being
A little less than a happy high
A little less than a suicide
The only things that you really tried
This is not my life
It's just a fond farewell to a friend
It's not what I'm like
It's just a fond farewell to a friend

Fond farewell to a friend
